In the Company of Friends

Of Women and Men - Tim McConnell

Nov. 1

In the old movie, When Harry Met Sally, Harry Burns declared confidently that women and men can never be friends. The sexual tension is always there and will always ruin it. Are there some odd ways the church has adopted that same position? Jesus gathered women among his followers. The early church was replete with women in influential positions. Paul’s own list of friends includes many women. It’s hard to guess on some of the names, but it looks like out of 28 mentioned, 13 are women, including a Deacon (Phoebe), a church planter (Priscilla), and an Apostle (Junia). In our church we have biblical warrant, we believe, to have women serve in all offices of the church. That is not universally agreed among Christians, but this is a good week to explain why we do it. Harry was wrong; women and men can be friends in Christ.
