Awake to Sexual Identity - Tim McConnell

May. 22

Sexual identity exploration is nothing new. People often argue that the reason Jesus and the rest of the New Testament didn’t bless and support the wide range of sexual identities we currently see in our era is that they didn’t have understanding or awareness of sexual behavior and tendency. Actually, Jesus would have been well aware and fully exposed to various forms of sexual behaviors. Romans and Greeks practiced homosexuality. Other peoples practiced polygamy. Religious rituals of cults included polyamory and the use of child prostitutes for supposed spiritual practices. In that environment, Jesus lifted up the key Scripture defining God’s intent for sexuality and marriage, Genesis 2:24. Sexuality is a great thing, but it is not the only thing. It is part of our identity, but it is not the defining part of our identity. God made sex as a beautiful and wonderful gift to be enjoyed within the bounds of a covenant of marriage. When we take a good thing and make it the ultimate thing, we lose our center and fall into idolatry and confusion. Jesus is very much awake to issues of sexuality and identity. He shows us the life-giving way.
