This "Covid Crisis" has driven us back to the roots of early Christianity: "They met from house to house." There were no large gatherings of Christians; no "mega churches," nonetheless the church grew and flourished. This fall we will be studying Acts 1–14, from the birth of the Church on Pentecost to the missionary journeys of the Apostle Paul. Together we will:

  • Study the birth and growth of the early church
  • Look deeply at the integral part the Holy Spirit played in the formation and growth of the early church
  • Learn about "House Churches" and how they functioned
  • Take an in-depth look at the personalities who helped form the early church
  • Examine how the early church faced adversity, yet thrived, and apply those outcomes to our unusual personal experiences even today

Teacher: Pat Hartsock
Class Length: September 9 through November 11

We live in a time when all of us are carrying heavy burdens—worries about illness, finances, family and friends in a time of pandemic; anxiety about a social order that seems to be unraveling; concerns about racial tensions, unjust racist acts, and racial reconciliation. There are times when we wake up and say, "Lord Jesus, if you're not coming back today, could you please send the Sweet Meteor of Death?" In hard times, what does resilience mean for followers of Jesus? These burdens seem almost too much to bear. Can we put them down? Should we put them down? And, how will we ever recover from the weight of these burdens that crush us? During this course we will dive into the stories of biblical characters like Abraham and Esther to learn about burdens—what they do to us, what they do for us, and how we bear them.

GTWfall20_emailheader-lament.jpg

Have you experienced loss this year? Are you wrestling with hard emotions? Why does Jesus say that it is a blessing to lament (Matthew 5:4)? Join Pastor Michael Thornton (Discipleship), and other guest teachers, including Rev. Dr. John Goodale (Caring Ministries) and Mark and Leigh Ann Looyenga, as we learn to receive and practice the blessing of lament. Drawing from the books of Job, the Psalms, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations and Romans, this 10-week survey course on lament will equip you to better steward the pain within and around you. The brokenness of the world can illicit feelings such as anger, frustration, broken heartedness, confusion, abandonment and conviction. Feeling the heaviness of these emotions can drive us to turn away from God, but what if it is supposed to be the opposite? What if God actually uses these times of stress to draw us closer to Himself? Come learn how to walk closer with God when the world feels upside down.

Growing in empathy, compassion and understanding as we engage with race in America. A 21-day discipleship journey designed to help us become more like Jesus in the way we understand and engage with race. We will align our hearts with God's love for people of all ethnic backgrounds, and deepen our compassion and love for our neighbors who are different from us. This will help us be more effective witnesses to Jesus Christ collectively and individually.
